Is My Old Wiring Dangerous?

Old wiring is not always dangerous, but some types genuinely are. Here are the warning signs worth acting on.

The short answer

Old wiring can be dangerous if it has perished rubber, lead or fabric insulation, no earth on lighting circuits, or an old fuse box with no RCD. Cable in the old red-and-black colours (pre-2006) is not dangerous in itself but is a sign the installation is ageing and worth inspecting. The reliable way to know is an EICR, which tests the wiring and tells you exactly what condition it is in.

Many Manchester homes still have decades-old wiring, and not all of it needs ripping out. But certain types are genuinely unsafe and should be replaced. Here is how to judge it.

Warning signs of dangerous wiring

Be concerned if you see any of these:

  • Rubber, fabric or lead-sheathed cable (often perished and crumbling).
  • No earth wire on lighting circuits.
  • An old fuse box with rewireable fuses and no RCD.
  • Brown scorch marks around sockets or switches.
  • Frequent tripping, buzzing, or a faint burning smell.

How to know for sure

Old cable colours (red and black, changed to brown and blue in 2006) tell you the installation is ageing but not that it is unsafe. The definitive answer is an EICR: it tests every circuit and grades any issues, so you know whether you need a full rewire, a partial one, or nothing at all.

Frequently asked questions

Does old wiring always need replacing?
No. Plenty of older installations are perfectly safe. An EICR tells you what actually needs doing, so you are not paying for a rewire you do not need.
