The short answer

A full rewire of a typical three-bed house takes around five to ten working days for the electrical work, plus extra time for plastering and decorating where walls have been chased. An empty property is much quicker than an occupied one. Smaller flats can be done in a few days; larger or older homes take longer.

Timing matters when you are planning around a rewire — especially if you are living in the house. Here is a realistic schedule and what moves it.

Typical timescales

As a guide for the electrical work itself:

  • One/two-bed flat: 3–5 days
  • Three-bed semi/terrace: 5–8 days
  • Four-bed or larger / older property: 8–12+ days
  • Then add plastering and drying time where walls were chased.

What makes it faster or slower

An empty house with clear access is the fastest scenario — we can work straight through. An occupied home is slower because we work room by room, keep power on overnight, and move furniture. Solid walls, concrete floors and no loft access also add time, as cable runs are harder.

Frequently asked questions

Can I stay in the house during a rewire?
Yes — we rewire occupied homes regularly, working in stages so you keep power overnight. It takes longer and is more disruptive than an empty property, but it is entirely normal.
