Do I Need an Electrician to Install Garden Lights?
Plug-in low-voltage kits are DIY-friendly; mains-voltage or hardwired garden lighting should be done by an electrician. Here is the line.

The short answer
For simple plug-in, low-voltage garden lights you do not need an electrician — they are designed for DIY. But mains-voltage garden lighting, anything hardwired, or a new outdoor circuit should be installed by a qualified electrician: outdoor electrical work carries a higher shock risk and a new circuit is notifiable under Part P. RCD protection is essential for any mains outdoor lighting.
Garden lighting ranges from a plug-in solar set to a designed, hardwired scheme — and the right answer to “do I need an electrician” depends on which end of that range you are at.
When you can DIY
Low-voltage plug-and-play kits — solar lights, or 12V/24V systems with a plug-in transformer — are made for homeowners to fit. As long as you are plugging into an existing, RCD-protected outdoor socket and following the instructions, that is fine to do yourself.
When to call an electrician
Use a qualified electrician for:
- Mains-voltage (230V) garden lighting.
- Any hardwired fittings or a new buried cable run.
- A new outdoor circuit from the consumer unit (notifiable under Part P).
- Anything where you are unsure the supply is properly protected.
